I) RICHTER SCALE
Uses a number to quantify the seismic energy & shakingamplitude released by an earthquake
The scale is based on a logarithmic value of base 10
An increase of 1 unit in magnitude on the Richter scale has anincrease of 10 times the shaking amplitude
Calculated by taking the logarithm of the combined horizontalamplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a Wood–Anderson torsion seismometer  output.

Most earthquake questions in Math 12 will compare theintensity of different earthquakes
Ie: how many times one EQ is bigger than another
Ex: How many times as intense as the Messina, Italy EQ(7.5) was the Valparaiso, Chile EQ (8.6)?
Difference or Increasein Richter Scale
Intensity of
smaller EQ
Intensity of
greater EQ
The Valparaiso EQ  was 12.6 times
Greater than the Messina EQ

PRACTICE: THE HIROSHIMA BOMB HAS A RICHTER SCALE OF5.0.  WHAT IS THE RICHTER SCALE OF ANOTHER BOMB THAT ISTWICE AS INTENSE?
The Richter Scale will be 0.301029995greater than the R.S. of the HiroshimaBomb.
NOTE: the larger intensity is twice as the smaller intensity
The increase in R.S. is unknown.

II) LIGHT INTENSITY:
Ex: Sunlight travelling in ocean waterloses 15% per meter .  If a boat is50meters underwater, how muchsunlight is visible at that depth?

III) SOUND INTENSITY
Sound intensity is measured in decibels (dB)
For every increase in 10 dB is an increase of 10 times inloudness

IV) PH LEVELS (ACIDS & BASE)
PH levels measures the acidity/alkalinity of certain solutions
